Well the last two projects have definitely been two time consuming projects, different from the other ones in the blog.

That's what pushed me to build [Kalorie](https://kalorie.live).

What I Wanted to Build

The idea behind Kalorie was simple: a calorie tracker that actually works for everyone, not just people eating pre-packaged Western food. I wanted something where you could snap a photo of your plate and get real nutrition data back, even if that plate has kabsa on it.

But beyond that, I wanted it to feel effortless. The apps I used always felt like homework — logging meals was tedious, the interfaces were cluttered, and I'd always quit after a week. Kalorie had to be the opposite of that. Quick to log, clean to look at, and smart enough to help without getting in the way.

The Social Piece

One thing I noticed with my own tracking journey was that I stuck with it longer when friends were doing it too. So I built social features into Kalorie — you can add friends, compete on weekly goals, and keep each other accountable.

Every user gets a tag, kind of like Discord's old username system. Your display name plus a four-digit number, so you can find and add your friends easily.

Where It Stands Now

Kalorie is live on the [App Store](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/kalorie-ai-nutrition-tracker/id6760149092) and people are using it. The food database has over 2 million items, the AI recognition works in under 3 seconds, and the accuracy sits at around 80-85%.

What's Next

There's a lot I still want to add. Better analytics, more social features, and expanding the AI to understand even more regional cuisines. The goal has always been the same: make nutrition tracking something that works for real people eating real food, not just people optimizing their macros with protein powder and chicken breast.
